What Google AI Overviews show for local trades, and why

Read with AI ClaudeChatGPTGeminiPerplexity

Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly a third of local trade searches we track in Bristol. They almost never cite an individual contractor's homepage. They cite directories, trade bodies and pages that answer one specific question with a number on it.

Key takeaways

  • Overviews trigger most often on "how much", "do I need" and "is it legal" searches, not on "near me".
  • Emergency searches rarely show an Overview, because Google favours the map pack.
  • Cited sources skew heavily towards directories and trade bodies, not contractor homepages.
  • The reliable way in is a page answering one question, with a price or a regulation and a source.

Which searches actually trigger an Overview

We log 120 trade-related searches across Bristol postcodes every week. Overviews show on about 34% of them, and the split is not random. Question-shaped searches almost always trigger one: "how much is an EICR in Bristol", "do I need building regs for a rewire", "is a 7kW charger enough for a Kia". Straight hiring searches, "electrician near me" or "emergency plumber Bristol", usually do not, because the map pack already answers them.

That is good news and bad news. The searches closest to a booking are still won the traditional way, on profile and reviews. The searches that build trust weeks earlier are increasingly answered without anyone clicking through to a site. That split shapes how SEO Bristol plans work for trades: profile and reviews for the booking searches, answer-first pages for the ones the Overview now handles.

Who gets cited

Across the Overviews we captured in August, the cited sources broke down roughly as follows.

Source typeShare of citationsTypical example
Trade bodies and regulators31%NICEIC, Gas Safe Register, MCS
Directories and comparison sites28%Trade directories, our own comparison sites
National advice sites22%Which?, Citizens Advice, Energy Saving Trust
Individual contractor sites19%A single page answering one question

Nineteen per cent is small, but it is not nothing, and it is almost entirely made up of one page type: a focused answer page with a real number on it. Not a homepage, not a services page.

What to do about it

  1. Pick your ten questions. The ones you answer on the phone every week. Price, legality, timescale, suitability.
  2. Give each one a page. Title matching the question, answer in the first sentence, the number in the first paragraph.
  3. Cite the regulation. Link the actual Part P, EICR or MCS guidance. Overviews strongly favour pages that reference a primary source.
  4. Keep the date current. Prices go stale. Review each answer page quarterly and update the published date honestly when you do.

Questions people ask

Do Overviews cost me clicks?

On informational searches, yes. On hiring searches the effect so far is small, because those searches mostly do not show an Overview.

Can I opt out?

You can block AI snippet use with a meta tag, but you lose the citation as well as the summary. For a small local business that trade is rarely worth it.

How do I know if I am being cited?

Search Console reports AI Overview impressions separately now, and a weekly manual check of ten questions takes about fifteen minutes.
