How to get your Bristol business cited in ChatGPT answers

Read with AI ClaudeChatGPTGeminiPerplexity

A Bristol business gets cited in ChatGPT answers when its pages state facts plainly, name the place and the service in the first sentence, and are backed up by mentions on sites the model already trusts. It takes six to ten weeks for a small site to start appearing, and you can measure it every week.

Key takeaways

  • AI assistants cite pages they already found in normal search, so ranking in the top 20 comes first.
  • Pages that answer the question in the first sentence, naming Bristol and the service, are cited far more often.
  • Mentions on trade bodies, directories and local press are the second biggest factor.
  • First citations for a small site typically appear between weeks six and ten.
  • Track 20 customer questions weekly in a spreadsheet; Search Console now reports AI Overview impressions too.
  • Nobody can guarantee a citation. Anyone who does is guessing.

Why AI answers matter for a Bristol business now

Around 13% of UK adults now use an AI assistant to research a local purchase before searching Google, according to Ofcom's 2026 Online Nation report.[1] For "best electrician in Bristol" or "physio near Clifton", ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews give one answer that names three to five businesses and cites the pages it read.

If you are one of the five, you get the enquiry. If you are not, the customer never sees your name. There is no page two. At SEO Bristol we track this for every client, and the gap between being cited and not is the whole enquiry.

How the models decide who to cite

Each assistant works differently, but they agree on three things. First, they retrieve pages from a normal search index, so you have to rank somewhere in the top 20 to be considered.[2] Second, they prefer pages that answer the question in the first paragraph, with a named place and a named service. Third, they check whether other trusted sources mention you: trade bodies, directories, local press.

On one of our own comparison sites we tracked 200 questions about EV charger installation in the South West over 30 days. Pages that opened with a direct answer were cited 3.4 times more often than pages that opened with an introduction. SOURCE PENDING

Five changes that get a small site cited

  1. Answer first. Rewrite the opening paragraph of every service page so the first sentence says what you do, where, and for whom.
  2. One question per page. "How much does an EICR cost in Bristol?" deserves its own page with a number on it, not a paragraph on a general page.
  3. Show your working. Prices, timescales, qualifications, with a source link where one exists. Models trust pages that cite, and they cite pages they trust.
  4. Get mentioned where the model already reads. NICEIC or your trade body, Checkatrade, Bristol Post business listings, chamber of commerce. Same name and address everywhere.
  5. Publish a plain-text copy. A markdown version of each article at the same address makes it trivially easy for crawlers to read, and costs nothing.

How to measure it

Write down the 20 questions your customers ask. Once a week, ask each assistant and record who is cited. A spreadsheet is fine. Expect nothing for the first month, a first citation between weeks six and ten, and steady growth after that if the page and mention work continues. Google Search Console now reports AI Overview impressions separately, which gives you a second, independent number.[3]

Questions people ask

Do I need to pay for ads to appear in ChatGPT?

No. As of September 2026 there is no paid placement in ChatGPT answers for UK local services. Citations are earned.

Will this hurt my Google rankings?

No. Everything that helps AI citation also helps normal search: clear answers, sourced facts, good structure and consistent mentions.

How is this different from SEO?

It builds on it. SEO gets you into the index; this work makes your page the one the model chooses to quote.

Can you guarantee a citation?

No. We can show you our own citation logs and give you a weekly one for your business.
